One Stormy Night

by Tunisia Squire

flashStormy nights have come and gone but this night seemed to last forever. It feels as if the storm is getting worse by the second. Rain falls down from the sky with lightning and the thunder combine.

There is a house, a pleasant house with a white picket fence covered with red roses. Inside this pleasant house is a young girl. She is very pretty with smooth skin and long black hair. She’s sitting on her sofa in a white nightgown with her big brown eyes glued to the television.

What’s playing on TV? It’s a movie about a man accused of murder. In the movie, the police found the body of a young twelve-year-old girl in a lake near town. She was found her wearing a white nightgown and had smooth skin, long black hair and big brown eyes. The girl was missing for about three months and it’s believed that she was kidnapped one stormy night while her parents were out. The only suspect was an unidentified man who police describe as a man who’s tall, dark and wearing a black trench coat with a matching fedora hat. The chief of police gathers everyone at city hall to reveal the killer’s identity. “I know who did it,” said the chief. “I know who killed the young girl and it was–”

Suddenly, a special news bulletin appeared on the screen. “We interrupt this broadcast for a special news bulletin.” The reporter said. The girl sighs as she gets up and goes into the kitchen. “Police are on the search for a man accused of murdering a young girl. Earlier today, a young twelve-year-old girl was found dead in Shallow Grove Lake. The girl was missing for about three months.” The reporter explained. “Some believe that she was kidnapped on one stormy night by an unidentified man. The suspect is said to be a man who’s a tall, dark and wearing a black trench coat with a matching fedora hat. If you have any information on this man, please notify the local police and now, back to our scheduled programming.”

The girl comes back with a bowl of popcorn and flops back on the couch. The chief police is about to uncovered the killer’s identity. “Everyone stand back as I reveal killer’s identity.” the officer exclaimed. The girl’s eyes widened with anticipation while eating a handful of popcorn. “The man who is responsible for this terrible crime is —” and suddenly, the power goes out .The girl tries to turn the TV back on, but it won’t. Another flash of lightning appears and a big clap of thunder roared. The girl goes to the kitchen to search for a flashlight and goes down to the cellar to check the fuse box.

As she walks down the hall to reach the cellar door, the girl hears a strange sound, a weird scraping noise on the window. She looks down the hall at the front door and back towards the kitchen entrance. What was that? Maybe it’s just the wind or something she thought to herself. She walks into the living room to check if the windows are locked. She goes back into the kitchen to check those windows as well and a dark figure runs behind her as lightning flashes again.

The girl turns around and peeks her head out from the kitchen. The girl has this terrible, unsettling feeling in the pit of her stomach as she continues to hear that strange noise. “What’s that noise?” She thinks to herself. “Come on, There’s nothing to be scared of.” She calmly tells herself over and over again. Suddenly, the noise stops. The girl nervously makes her way back down the hallway to the cellar door. She opens the door and shines her flashlight down the stairway. She walks down the steps slowly as it makes a creaking noise with every step she takes.

Lightning flashes even more while the sound of thunder intensifies. She reaches for the fuse box and flips the latch up and down but the lights still won’t come on. She turns around and out the corner of her eye; she sees a dark and tall figure run across the room. The girl quickly shines her flashlight all around the cellar and there’s nothing or no one in the cellar except her. In that moment, the girl hears a loud crash. She drops the flashlight and runs back up the stairs but the door closes.

She grabs the doorknob and tries to open the door. She starts banging on the door and kicking it. “Help somebody, please someone, let me out!” the girl cries. She bangs her shoulder up against the door as hard as she can and the door finally swings open. The girl falls out onto the floor but she quickly gets up and shuts the door. She closes her eyes to catch her breath as her heart is beating out of her chest. “It’s okay” the girl calmly tells herself over and over.

Once again, she hears a scraping noise on the window. As she looks down the hallway towards the kitchen, the front door swings open. The girl quickly turns around and looks at the door. “Mom, Dad, is that you?” The girl calls out. She slowly starts walking towards the front door and feels something moist on the floor. She looks down and notices the floor is wet and there’s a trail leading from the front door to the cellar door. The girl becomes even more scared as her heartbeat is racing. She closes and locks the front door then walks back toward the cellar door. Slowly, she grabs the doorknob and opens it. She looks down the stairway and then the lights come back on. The young girl takes a deep breath of relief and closes the door. She turns around and sees a tall dark figure standing in front of her. The girl lets out a bloodcurdling scream.
