Middle Finger

by Jacob R. Moses

An upraised white hand flashing a middle finger with a blurry face in the background

In the aftermath of terror
Our bodies served as
Middle fingers to each other
In lieu of fighting systems

Somewhere down the line
We lost our humanity under
Guises of piety and logic
Riddled with gaping holes

Amid the disregard for life
We know the true models
Of tyranny lie within those
Scapegoat hunting warriors

Keyboards are now the weapons
Used to bully the downtrodden
As we comb the desert hoping
Brothers and sisters can spare love

We’ve become frigid as our
Own identities are reduced
To blood and bones which
Lie upon our social media

Feckless with our duty to humanity
Noting that the greatest obscenity
Lies within our eyes as governments
Choose genocide over diplomacy
