He Lost Ten Pounds

by Amy Covel

Messy bed from sleepless nights

He lost ten pounds
and has slowly found
where he left them.

He left one in his bed
during those sleepless nights,
wondering what was wrong
and what was right.

One he found in the bathroom,
carved into the floor
from all the mornings
his feet stood there
as he battled upset stomach.

Two more he found in the fridge,
hiding behind
food he couldn’t eat.

He found a pound
in his vitamin box,
afraid of those times
he couldn’t keep them down.

Three more he discovered
within his computer,
hiding in documents
that he himself had hid from.

The last two he found
without looking—
they found him.

This time
he will keep
a better watch.
