Slide on Over

by Juanita Jones

Girl coloring in her classroom.

Hey kid
Why don’t you slide on over
Sit on down
And tell me a story

Your road’s been long
With fear and hate
On the grounds of a school
War waged
Without any end
Except maybe yours

Hey kid
Why don’t you slide on over
Sit on down
And tell me a story

The blood had spilled
Staining the books
Bruising the soul
As much as the skin
Eroding layers of self
But you were still there

Hey kid
Why don’t you slide on over
Sit on down
And tell me a story

Before you think end
Stories need sharing
A child must have a chance
Let the dreams out
Then take them
To live without pain

Hey kid
Why don’t you slide on over
Sit on down
And tell me a story
Promising you will be here
