by Ann Minoff
on the corner of rush and walton an incandescent bridge
between the two halves of my mind
momentarily shines
as families crowd the stores
carrying packages for their holiday tree
my new grandson, daughter beside me
when this intergalactic nexus flashes through
the cheeriness and epidemic stimulation
the fa la la las and red-nosed reindeer
my own family jokes between themselves
but I can’t hear them anymore
they have dissolved into the christmas haze
instead words move across the bridge
like wild grass on a summer afternoon
whispers
do you know what you’re doing
at the end
you will be by yourself
even now
